On Monday, Pope Francis issued a letter to U.S. bishops in response to mounting concerns over the Trump administration’s implementation of a mass deportation program. Pope Francis reminded the American episcopate that God “is always close, incarnate, migrant and refugee,” and that Jesus Christ, “the Son of God, in becoming man, also chose to live the drama of immigration.”
The Pope called upon the Christian faithful to “consider the legitimacy of norms and public policies in the light of the dignity of the person and his or her fundamental rights, not vice versa.” While acknowledging the right of sovereign nations to regulate legal immigration, he warned against succumbing to an ideological imposition of the will of the strongest sectors of society, and implored “all men and women of good will” to resist narratives that “discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters.”
The Pope ended his letter with a call for Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Mexican patron-saint, to protect those experiencing the fear of deportation and to help people of all backgrounds “take a step forward in the construction of a society that is more fraternal, inclusive and respectful of the dignity of all.”

El lunes, el papa Francisco envió una carta a los obispos estadounidenses en respuesta a las crecientes preocupaciones por la implementación de un programa de deportación masiva por parte de la administración Trump. El papa Francisco recordó al episcopado estadounidense que Dios “siempre está cerca, encarnado, migrante y refugiado”, y que Jesucristo, “el Hijo de Dios, al hacerse hombre, también eligió vivir el drama de la inmigración”.
El papa llamó a los fieles cristianos a “considerar la legitimidad de las normas y políticas públicas a la luz de la dignidad de la persona y sus derechos fundamentales, no al revés”. Si bien reconoció el derecho de las naciones soberanas a regular la inmigración legal, advirtió contra sucumbir a una imposición ideológica de la voluntad de los sectores más fuertes de la sociedad, e imploró a “todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad” que resistan las narrativas que “discriminan y causan sufrimiento innecesario a nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes y refugiados”.
El papa finalizó su carta con un llamado a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, la patrona mexicana, para que proteja a quienes experimentan el miedo a la deportación y ayude a personas de todos los orígenes a “dar un paso adelante en la construcción de una sociedad más fraterna, inclusiva y respetuosa de la dignidad de todos”.
